Indochine: The Culinary Journey From Home To heart
After moving from Vietnam to North Carolina in 1975, Nicky longed for the taste of home and dreamed of sharing those familiar flavors with her new community. This vision became Indochine, a reputable Thai-Vietnamese restaurant. For over two decades, Indochine has served as a cultural bridge, bringing the vibrant flavors of Southeast Asian cuisine to Wilmington, North Carolina.
Target: Infuse Character Into The Brand
For those of Asian descent, there’s often a strong desire to reconnect with their roots, especially through the beloved flavors. Indochine strives to fulfill this longing, offering more than just a meal but a sense of belonging, a taste of home. The brand aimed to reflect this emotional connection in its new brand identity by capturing the heart and soul Nicky has poured into the restaurant over the years. The idea was to evoke nostalgia and comfort, telling a story of heritage, passion, and timeless flavors.
Visual Approach: Indochina Aesthetics
To bring this ambition to life, Favor crafted a color palette of deep red, faded yellow, and stone blue, reminiscent of 1980s street signs and graphics once prevalent across Southeast Asia. At the heart of the new logo is a fine line drawing of Nicky in her youth, wearing a traditional Vietnamese áo dài with a hibiscus flower tucked in her hair, an homage to the region’s tropical blooms. Complementing the primary logo, Favor designed a series of illustrations for various branding applications, from business cards to menus and tote bags. These visuals seamlessly blend retro charm with contemporary representations of Vietnamese and Thai culture, ensuring the brand feels both authentic and modern.
For Indochine Express, the “fun, younger sister of Indochine” offering delivery and takeaway, Favor created a playful secondary logo featuring an illustration of Nicky riding a cream-colored Vespa, a nod to Vietnam’s lively Vespa culture. This playful motif captures the fast-paced, energetic nature of Indochine Express while maintaining a strong visual connection to the main brand.
Longing For The Taste Of Home
Inspired by Nicky’s journey to bring the cherished flavors of home to her new community, Indochine’s new brand identity captures both her spirit and the rich culinary heritage of Vietnam and Thailand. It reflects a deep longing for the taste of home, each dish tells a story of memories, tradition, and heartfelt connections. Indochine doesn’t just serve food; it offers a nostalgic experience, where every bite rekindles the warmth of home, bridging the gap between distant roots and new beginnings.
